Samsung have produced a few touch screen mobile handsets over the past couple of years, but the Tocco is currently one of the best they offer, even though their rostra of touch screen handsets is growing at the moment. In fact, because the marketplace is so flooded with touch screen handsets all trying to take the crown from the iPhone you can get great deals on the Tocco and most other touch screen Samsung handsets at the moment. Though the Tocco is a rather impressive handset for its price range there are a few things that you should be aware of before committing yourself to a purchase and a few key features and functions that might help sell the Tocco to you.
The Samsung F480 Tocco - Key Features
The Tocco features a large 2.8 inch touch screen covering much of the front of the phone, with only three physical buttons controlling call and menu functions, which gives the Tocco an uncluttered, clean looking finish. The screen itself is good, with a clear, crisp image displayed, and widescreen content such as movies and TV shows can be viewed in their native aspect ratios if you hold the handset sideways to view them, which is a sensible and competitive feature to include. Like LG and other manufacturers, Samsung have included `haptic feedback` integrated as part of the touch screen design. What this means is that when you press one of the onscreen icons or buttons, a small vibration generated by the phone will let you know that the touch has been successful, and the idea is that it will feel like you`ve pressed a real physical button. This works really well and makes using the touch screen really involving, and lets you know exactly whether you`ve applied the right amount of pressure or pressed the right area of the screen. The Tocco also has a pretty cool widget system which makes the home screen really customisable. The home screen functions like your desktop screen on your PC, and the Tocco`s software allows you to drag and drop various applications like a clock, calendar, music player or photo viewer onto the home screen so that you can use them whenever you like. This level of customisation might appeal to some, but other may not use it at all, as the menu system is pretty comprehensive and intuitive anyway.
The Samsung F480 Tocco - Technical Stuff
What makes the Tocco particularly appealing is its 3G and HSDPA connectivity which means it can access mobile internet at blazing speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. It also features a 5 Megapixel camera with face recognition and smile recognition, which only takes a picture if your subject has a cheesy grin on their face. These camera and networking functions trump anything the iPhone has to offer and may be the key points you`ll consider.
The Samsung Tocco F480 - The Negatives
The Samsung
Tocco does have a couple of issues that hinder it`s rating. The touch screen, though large and featuring haptic feedback, feels bogged down and slow most of the time, with transitions and button presses taking a little longer than is comfortable to respond. It also lacks a full onscreen qwerty keyboard that most of its rival touch screen handsets offer, which makes messaging and browsing a bit of a pain.
